know what i love even more than good series with hot boys? good series with hot boys and greatly handled female characters, something which is unfortunately still too rare in japanese entertainment. and jeez, would you look at this new series, with its lolita, naked catgirl and chick with huge boobs, surely they’re going to be objectified, shallow characters whose only purpose is tied to the male characters, right??? wrong. i too, judged off first looks and feared K project would present us with humiliating portrayal of women as many other anime series do, but was quickly proved wrong, and ended up thoroughly pleased instead~
never sitting down and complying to the every wishes of the other characters, all three of the main ladies do quite the opposite, and seem to exercise a great amount of influence over the others. from seri who has so much authority she can even get fushimi and yata to submit to her demands, to neko who claims ownership over shiro, to anna whom the members of the red clan can never refuse a request to, it’s clear that their voices are just as important than any other… even the kings, reisi and mikoto, clearly wouldn’t want to do anything that would upset them! everyone has a lot of respect for them and seems to hold them in high esteem, and it’s to the point where it almost feels like the ladies have more authority over their respective groups than anyone else does (´ω`)
with seri’s swordsmanship second only to that of the blue king’s, neko’s illusionary powers, and anna’s special vision ability, all three of them have a large role to play within their respective clans and none of them should ever be called useless or weak. not to mention how great it is that only one of them physically fights, but in no way are the other two seen as lesser for not wielding weapons… and while we’re at it, nor are two certain male characters who fight with wits rather than fists!
yet another aspect that makes the series so pleasant for those who appreciate seeing women portrayed respectfully is how no one is ever condescending or impudent towards them. sure, shiro and kuroh would appreciate if neko didn’t run around stark naked, but there are absolutely no “but you’re a girl!!” implications in sight, no comments on seri’s formfitting uniform, no boob or butt jokes nor grabs or stares (which are sadly way too much of a common form of “humor” in anime), and even no negative comments directed towards the memory of red character, yubikiri maria, for her one-night stands.
it’s simply that nothing in the series ever makes the female characters into anything lesser than the male characters; something that should be a norm and not require praise, but unfortunately, this still isn’t the case in entertainment. anna might be under the protection of the red king, seri might work for the blue king, and neko might be very close to shiro, but never does it seem like their sole purpose is tied to any of the male characters or that they don’t have goals and reasons of their own… after all, kuroh and the other members of the red and blue clans are pretty much in the same position as they are! the ladies are certainly not mere love interests or objects of fanservice either… and once again, when it comes to this, the boys are seen in just as much, if not more flirtacious situations and positions that would please the viewers as they are ( ʘ̅ωʘ̅)
and so, the chick with huge boobs also happens to be a woman of authority, independence and strength who also loves letting her hair down and enjoying a good talk over a drink, the naked catgirl is a cheerful, friendly, caring young lady who appreciates company, teasing others and is in no way short of being identical to an actual cat, and the lolita is a key member of a street gang with unique skills, gentleness and perception that guides them… and all three of them are blessed with deep bonds and strong dynamics with various other characters, which makes them even more of great characters. long story short, i’m simply so thankful that K embodies one of the most important aspects that makes a good series to me… and am quietly laughing at all those who said the series would be misogynistic before the anime even started airing (´∀`)~♪
